An announcement that the Friarage Hospital’s urgent treatment centre will remain open 24/7 has been welcomed as a ‘step in the right direction’ by hospital campaigners.
NHS bosses announced last month that the centre’s hours would not be reduced.
The decision was made by the governing body of North Yorkshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG).
It followed an 18-week consultation about the future of the Northallerton hospital.
Holly Wilkinson, from the Save the Friarage Hospital Campaign, which has pushed for an A&E to be reinstated at the hospital, said the group was pleased that the CCG had decided to keep the 24-hour urgent treatment centre.
She added: “Whilst it’s not the result we were hoping for, it is definitely a step in the right direction.
“Whilst we are not campaigning actively at the moment due to the coronavirus pandemic, we are working hard to make the case for a fully functioning accident and emergency department to be reinstated and also improvements to existing services to be made.”
