The High Sheriff of North Yorkshire has appointed a fire and rescue cadet to assist him in his official duties.
A ceremony to appoint Samuel Baxter, from Northallerton Fire Cadets, as the High Sheriff of North Yorkshire’s Cadet for 2020/21 took place on Wednesday.
The High Sheriff, David Kerfoot MBE DL, is currently unable to attend events in person due to the Covid-19 restrictions, and so rather than put things on hold, has gone online to enable events to go ahead live as planned.
He appeared live on-screen from his home at Ainderby Steeple dressed in full shrieval dress to conduct the ceremony with others at Northallerton Fire Station.
Present with Samuel were chief fire officer Andrew Brodie, station manager for Hambleton District Michael Dale, crew manager of Northallerton Fire Station and lead instructor for Northallerton Fire Cadets Adam Farrow and Samuel’s mum Maggie Baxter.
The High Sheriff said: “I feel it is important to get young people involved with the High Sheriff, and looking at all the things the fire cadets do and are involved in, is very thrilling and fills me with hope for our future’.”
Samuel’s duties as High Sheriff’s Cadet will involve escorting the High Sheriff on official duties to various events across our region and to assist with any presentations he makes.
Chief fire officer Andrew Brodie talked of the importance of the fire cadets service in equipping young people with the skills and attributes for their future careers and also praised cadet instructor Adam Farrow for his time and effort to the service.
Additionally, he thanked the cadets themselves for what they bring to society, and praised the cadet scheme which provides young people with positive role models, activities and respect for others.
He said to Samuel: “You are a credit to yourself, Northallerton Cadets and North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and you epitomise everything we look for.”
Station manager Michael Dale added: “It was great to be a part of the e-ceremony and an honour and a pleasure to observe the beaming smile on Samuel’s face as he was formally announced as NYFRS nominated cadet to support the High Sheriff in his role.”
Maggie Baxter, Sam’s mum, said: “Firstly, I would like to thank the Northallerton fire cadets for allowing this opportunity.
“This is a real honour for Sam and he was thrilled to be chosen. He is really looking forward to working alongside the High Sheriff and will enable him to grow and develop as a cadet.
“Sam has shown real commitment, dedication and enthusiasm in his role and we are all so very proud of the young man he has become.”
