A fundraising challenge to help save the UK’s charities raised over £700 through Hambleton District Council’s four leisure centres.

The 2.6 Challenge was developed by organisers of the biggest mass-participation sports events across the country, including the London Marathon and parkruns. They have come together to raise vital funds for various UK charities.

Staff at the centres in Bedale, Northallerton, Stokesley and Thirsk & Sowerby asked their  customers last week to join them in taking part in any activity either individually or as a family, based around the numbers 2.6 or 26.  Activities included everything from 26 mile bike rides, 2.6 mile walks and runs to 26 gymnastics/trampoline somersaults and 26 netball chest passes.

“I would like to say a big thank you to every single person who took part in whatever they did no matter how big or small and to everyone who sponsored a friend or family member,” said  Councillor Bridget Fortune, portfolio holder for Leisure who took part in the challenge dressed as a rabbit and completed 26 laps of her paddock.

“We set out to raise £400 but we nearly doubled this which was a fantastic effort and we hope that people had some fun along the way whilst raising valuable money for NHS Charities Together – supporting NHS Staff and Volunteers caring for COVID-19 patients.

“Well done Hambleton.”
