Hot meal service for the elderly launched in Northallerton

A charity and local business have launched a service providing hot meals to older people in Northallerton during the lockdown.

Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington is partnering with Central Stop Café to provide the nutritionally balanced hot meals.

The charity says the scheme builds on the success of an existing scheme that is already seeing over 100 meals a day being delivered in other areas, including Darlington and Richmond.

The charity added that it was responding to requests to help Northallerton residents access the service as well.

The charity provides a substantial, nutritionally balanced two course set menu seven days a week delivered between 12pm and 2pm to ensure that older people who are isolated due to the coronavirus pandemic remain healthy.

Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington chief executive Helen Hunter said: “A supply of good, nutritious food is a key part of keeping older people healthy and well at this difficult time.

“With many older people isolated and unable to safely cook for themselves, providing a hot meal and maintaining good nutritional health is important to reduce the burden on overstretched local authorities and NHS staff during this crisis.”

The meals can be ordered by calling 01325 741492 or emailing catering@ageuknyd.org.uk
