Work to widen Tanton Bridge near Stokesley will start later this month with the aim of reducing accidents and providing a safer crossing for pedestrians.
North Yorkshire County Council will carry out the work on the B1365.
“As it stands, Tanton Bridge is not suitable for the traffic demands of the 21st century,” said county councillor Bryn Griffiths, member for Stokesley.
“There have been numerous repairs due to collisions in recent years, which is ultimately down to the width of the bridge and the nature of the sharp corner it is on.
“The bridge is also having to deal with increased traffic due to new housing developments being built in Stokesley.”
The appearance of the bridge will be maintained with the dismantled walls being reused. The reconstruction of the bridge will be in keeping with the same ashlar stone used when it was built.
The work will begin on Monday, 20 January, lasting 20 weeks under a full road closure.
Diversion signs will be put up on the first day of the closure.
County Councillor Don Mackenzie, executive member for highways, added: “This work is essential for improving safety and reducing the number of incidents resulting in road closures and costly repairs.
“We apologise for any inconvenience the closure will cause, but we are sure those who regularly use the route will welcome this major improvement.”
