World of James Herriot in Thirsk has installed new tech which gives foreign visitors a fully guided tour of the attraction on their own device in any language.
Visitors simply point their smartphone or tablet at a QR code on each exhibit and an app converts the description into the visitors’ own language either in text or audio.
The system is provided by Papillon Translations whose translators have first-hand knowledge of the target markets.
The visitor attraction says this is not only important for accuracy but also to be able to provide in-depth knowledge of local and cultural influences.
This also ensures the translations acknowledge the target audience and sensitivity of the local environment, that may not be obvious to the casual translator.
“This is a great service for our visitors as we know that around 35 per cent of people who visit the World of James Herriot are from overseas and appreciate the experience and the improvement in knowledge it brings,” said World of James Herriot’s managing director, Ian Ashton.
The attraction is open every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day and attracts many coach groups, families and a large following of James Herriot fans.
It is enjoying new attention due to the Channel 5 Yorkshire Vet TV series about the present day version of the very same veterinary practice that James Herriot made famous with his books, films and BBC TV series about his life as a country vet in what is now known worldwide as Herriot Country.
A new version of the All Creatures Great and Small series is currently in production by Channel 5 and is due to be screened in late 2020.
“As the increasing number of overseas visitors has shown, the Herriot story is still a worldwide phenomenon and this is an additional tool in our activities to improve their experience and which is also useful for English-speaking visitors because the information provided is retained on the visitors device so that they have record of the things that interested them during their visit.” added Ian Ashton.
