Thorp Perrow Arboretum celebrates triple win at Yorkshire in Bloom competition

Thorp Perrow Arboretum has won three awards at the Yorkshire in Bloom competition.

the attraction near Bedale has been awarded a Yorkshire in Bloom Gold, Joint Category Award and Joint Best Business Award in the Yorkshire Rose Tourist Attraction category.

The arboretum was praised by judges for its environmental impact, especially for the wildflower meadows planted this year. Thorp Perrow was also nominated for the Conservation Award.

The judges expressed thanks to the generations of the Ropner family, who established and continue to maintain the collection today.

The judges said: “Visiting Thorp Perrow on what turned out to be a beautiful summer day was a delight.

“The welcome was warm, the initial impact of the site, amazing and the knowledge and dedication of the staff truly impressive.”

Faith Douglas, curator at Thorp Perrow, said: “We are all very proud of the arboretum and everyone’s hard work in achieving this award.

“The Arboretum is an important educational tool for children and adults alike, throughout Yorkshire and beyond.”

Lady Ropner added: “We wish to publicly thank Faith, the hardworking grounds staff and the legion of unpaid volunteers who are as passionate about the Arboretum as we are.”

Covering 100 acres, Thorp Perrow Arboretum boasts one of the largest collections of shrubs and trees in the North of England; including 5 National Collections and 59 Champion Trees.

Thorp Perrow has been carefully constructed to provide interest all year round, which was recognised by the judges.

Yorkshire in Bloom is a voluntary regional organisation that administers the Britain in Bloom Campaign in Yorkshire, spearheaded nationally by the RHS.

Yorkshire in Bloom encourages and develops community spirit and civic pride whilst promoting responsibility for planting, cleanliness and maintenance.
