Views sought on Northallerton for guide

Northallerton High Street.

Northallerton residents, businesses and visitors are being asked for their views on the town.

Northallerton Business Improvement District (BID) is working with Hambleton District Council on the development of a design guide for the town as part of the council’s vibrant market towns initiative.

Once completed it will provide a blueprint for how the town should look, determine what gives it character and help preserve what makes it unique.

It will also steer improvements that enhance and build on these characteristics.

“This guide will be incorporated into the district council’s Local Plan which helps steer all future developments in the district,” said deputy leader of the council, Councillor Peter Wilkinson.  “But first local people are being asked to help shape it.”

A questionnaire has been drafted asking them everything from what they like and dislike about the town centre, what are the town’s best and worst views, and why they come to Northallerton.

They are also being asked what is distinctive and memorable about the journeys into the market place – from Thirsk, Bedale, the A19, Darlington and Yafforth.

And views on the alleyways, becks, footpath network and Applegarth Park are also being sought, along with a final probe into how the High Street could be improved.

Graham Bell, manager of the Northallerton BID said: “This is a great opportunity for the people of Northallerton to have their say on how our county town should look and be developed, with the chance to influence planning policy for generations to come.”

The survey can be accessed on: www.hambleton.gov.uk/survey/designguide.

It closes on June 28.
