The month long countdown to the Tour de Yorkshire’s arrival in Bedale began this week with the raising of the official race flag.
The flag is now flying above Bedale Hall to celebrate the event coming to the town on May 3.
Representatives from Bedale Town Council, Bedale Museum and Bedale Community Library – all based at Bedale Hall – helped hoist the flag on the roof of the building, which will be used as the race, media and emergency control centre on 3 May.
The world’s press will be based there as well as members of the organising groups – Hambleton District Council, Welcome to Yorkshire and the Amaury Sports Organisation.
Plans are coming together for a day of celebrations for the visit – when both the women’s and the men’s races finish in the market place after a 137km ride from Barnsley.
In Bedale Park there will be big screens, children’s fairground rides, live music, food, drink and charity stalls, a display of vintage racing bikes and the chance to see team buses and race vehicles.
On and around the Market Place finishing line a variety of entertainment is planned in between the two races including an amateur ‘ride the route’ event, a parade of decorated bikes, and music from the Bedale Brass Band and Northallerton Longsword Dancers.
Schoolchildren are coming out of lessons to see the race finishes and the route into town is expected to be lined with thousands of residents, visitors and cycling fans.
