A warning has been issued after reports of rogue traders targeting vulnerable people in Northallerton.
In one case this week an elderly woman was pressured into paying £27 for a cleaning cloth and a pair of rubber gloves.
Trading standards officers at North Yorkshire County Council are investigating.
County councillor Andrew Lee, North Yorkshire’s executive member for trading standards, said: “Our trading standards officers are aware of issues of cold calling in Northallerton and surrounding areas and of pressured selling of high-priced items on the doorstep.
“Our enquiries are ongoing and we would urge residents with any concerns about these matters to contact the Citizen’s Advice consumer service on 0345 4040506.”
If people feel threatened by cold-callers they should notify North Yorkshire Police by calling 999.
