A charity set up to increase and improve the availability of life-saving equipment in Northallerton has received one of the Hambleton’s largest ‘making a difference’ grants.
The district council scheme awarded Restarting Hearts £7,500 to help with an ambitious project to install 15 defibrillators in the town and its surrounding villages.
“Nobody knows where or when a cardiac arrest will strike,” said Hambleton district councillor Brian Phillips, one of the ward members who supported the application.
“But being within two or three minutes of the nearest defibrillator will not only increase the chances of survival but also reduce the stress and anxiety of those living with cardiovascular disease and fearing death from cardiac arrest. It is great to be able to help projects like this that are so important and benefit the whole community.”
Rod Winter, chairman of Restarting Hearts, added: “A huge amount has been achieved in the last twelve months with support from organisations like Hambleton District Council.
“There are now 22 defibrillators available around the clock in the Northallerton area – this is three times more than were in place a year ago.
“As Northallerton is going through a period of significant growth, it is more important than ever that we continue our mission to increase the number of defibrillators in the town and make sure everyone knows where they are and how to use them.”
The charity is also planning free training sessions working with local businesses that have private defibrillators urging them to fit them outside properties so they are available for the public to use too.
