Work to bring a former landfill site back to life as a sports village is well underway.
Extensive landscaping work at the Sowerby development will bring parts of the site into use this spring.
A wide range of native species are being planted, selected to attract as much wildlife and biodiversity to the site as possible – including trees, hedgerows, grasses and wild flowers.
Bird nesting boxes, hedgehog holes and bug hotels will also be created.
The Sowerby Environmental Space Project – phase one of the sports village development – is rehabilitating 5.3 hectares of land for informal sport and recreation.
It is being developed by Hambleton District Council and part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
“The scheme is reaching an important part of its development – the landscaping work will bring it to life, encouraging a range of small mammals, birds and insects,” said Councillor Mark Robson, leader of Hambleton District Council.
“Encouraging biodiversity is important to the Council and this work will not only help to deliver environmental and sustainability outcomes, but also the wider health and wellbeing benefits of providing a place for informal and formal sport and recreation.”
