Hambleton District Council has secured more than £800,000 towards the development of a sports village in Northallerton.

The project has been awarded £503,706 from the European Regional Development Fund.

It will be used for the Northallerton Environmental Enhancement Project – the first phase of the sports village which will improve the existing Stone Cross open space and bring additional land to the north of the site into community use for the provision of informal sport.

Another £310,442 has been allocated to the scheme from the Community Infrastructure Levy which will be used for both this phase and future phases that will see the development of facilities for formal sport including the construction of a full size 3G artificial pitch.

Members of the council’s cabinet gave the go ahead for the scheme when they met today.

“This is a very exciting project for Northallerton and will give residents access to top class sports facilities in the heart of the town,” said council leader, Councillor Mark Robson.

“If it proves as popular as our sports village in Sowerby we will have people queueing up to use it.

“The village is an integral part of the North Northallerton development which will see retail, residential, education, hospitality and employment opportunities brought to the edge of the market town.”

The first phase of the work will see the creation of new fitness trails, linking existing routes in and around Stone Cross to the new land, which will provide traffic free links between the new housing developments and the town centre.

It will link communities to the High Street, education establishments, leisure facilities and work places.

Extensive environmental enhancements will also be undertaken including woodland management, construction of community allotments, installation of bird and bat boxes and an otter holt that will all contribute to improving biodiversity.

Work is due to start in Spring 2021 – as part of the wider North Northallerton Masterplan.
