Police say a 60-tonne stone crusher reported to have been stolen from a Northallerton town centre building site was actually repossessed.

Police put out an appeal this morning after the huge machine was reported to have been stolen from the site of the town’s former prison and just yards from North Yorkshire Police’s headquarters over the weekend.

The force appealed for information following the alleged theft from the the site on East Road in Northallerton, where the new multi-million pound Treadmills shopping and leisure complex is being built.

However, the force has now issued an update to say they have spoken to the site security and the Sandvick 60-tonne red and grey stone crusher was actually repossessed.

Police say the machine had been reported to them as stolen in error.
