‘Britain’s smallest panto’ launches in Hambleton village hall

Panto cast get ready for opening night.

A small Hambleton village hall is celebrating Village Halls Week with the opening of its annual pantomime this week.

Dubbed ‘Britain’s smallest panto’ by the BBC due to the size of the hall – it can take just 60 guests – Puss in Boots will play to packed audiences over the next two weekends.

And with major improvements made to the facility over the last couple of years, audiences will benefit from comfortable seating, modern heating and aesthetically pleasing surroundings.

But the team that runs the hall is not stopping there! “We want to replace the kitchen next,” said Rosemary Kind, chairman of the village hall committee.

“All the fittings were secondhand when they were installed twenty years ago and have served us well – but now it’s time for us to bring them up to date.  We are fundraising hard and hope to see this work begin after Easter this year.”

The hall, which sits on Tholthorpe village green, started life as the village school and underwent a major restoration programme in 2000.  This latest improvement work has  attracted new regular classes and the village residents are in full support.

Whether it is attending the Primetime sport for all sessions, pilates or dance  classes or any one of a number of activities from Pancake tossing and Beetle Drives to History evenings and Fun Days many of the village get involved.

“The committee is ambitious in its plans but want the hall to be the very best it can be for the community to use,” said Aly Thompson, secretary of the committee.

“We have benefited by having new younger members joining the committee and we’ve got every reason to feel confident looking ahead.”

  • Puss in Boots plays on January 24, 25, 26 and 31; and Feby 1 and 2 – for tickets call Julie Henley on 01347 838531 – however there is very limited availability.
