A £15.4 million scheme to regenerate Northallerton town centre will be discussed by district councillors next week.
Members of Hambleton District Council’s Cabinet will next week be asked to give the thumbs up to a bid for central government cash which would transform the market town.
The proposals include a redeveloped High Street – creating an open air events space, artisan craft yard and a leisure area for residents and visitors to enjoy.
Northallerton is one of 101 towns across the UK to go forward for Future High Streets Funding from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG).
The district council was asked to develop a business case to access cash from the fund – which is looking for schemes that provide major change and make towns fit for the future.
Hambleton’s vision for Northallerton – for which it is applying for £7.1 million – moves the town beyond its reliance on the existing retail trade.
It aims to build upon that by creating a better night time economy, more cultural and leisure opportunities and uncovering its hidden heritage.
The schemes include Treadmills – the redevelopment of the town’s former prison which in phase two will provide a cinema, restaurant, cafes – and a post 18 education facility.
On the High Street there will be an emphasis on living spaces above shops as well as an artisan craftyard and increased public realm space around the Town Hall to include new planting and seating, places for outdoor market stalls and events.
“This is a very exciting development for Hambleton.
“If this space is opened up we can make it suitable for events, and develop the High Street as place for people to linger and enjoy. Ensuring that the new Treadmills development and the High Street work together will also benefit the town,” said Council Leader, Councillor Mark Robson.
“As the hub of the town – in the heart of Northallerton – it will provide a pleasant space for people to meet, relax and enjoy spending their leisure time.
“That in turn will improve the economy as people choose to come here and spend more time.”
Councillors will discuss the submission for funding at their meeting on July 7.
It must be with MHCLG by the end of July with successful bids announced by the end of September.
The scheme will be match funded by the District Council and the Local Enterprise Partnership.
